Watercolours are great and I love the bright colours in this one. If I could make a suggestion?
You've had to work the bright background around the figures in the foreground which kind of spoils the arcs of colour that are at the edges (you've had to paint more carefully around the figures).
What I would have done is mask out the foreground figures (the couple) with latex masking fluid so that I could paint the vibrant background with having to use tight brush strokes in the middle. One the masking fluid had dried you could use lovely free strokes right across the masked area.
Once the background paint had dried you could rub off the mask with a fingertip (be careful not to roll it over the painted area) and the masked area will be lovely and white waiting for you to paint it.
thanks so much for the advice! the coloring of edges is my problem indeed. Latex masked fluid? I'll try to find it! can I use it AFTER painting? I mean, on the watercolor.
As long as the paint is thoroughly dry and you're very gentle when rolling the masking fluid off you can use it over already painted areas. I have found that it sometimes lifts some paints - perhaps it depends upon the quality of the paint. Usually it's used to preserve the whiteness of the paper - and that's how I've had the most success with it.
It's quite satisfying rolling the latex off and be left with a lovely white negative space in the midst of a painted area.
You should be able to get masking fluid at any good watercolour suppliers.
I was worried at the beggining (when I started with the background) because it looked like shit. yes, shit.
You know what they say: any work has it's moment of drama.
Of course it does. That's how half my drawings start out. I have a frog on here that looked really bad when I drew it put then when I was done it turned out REALLY good.
